Enclosed in small cages, canaries were carried into the mines by coal miners. Canaries are much more sensitive to dangerous gases and they worked as a type of alarm. If the canary fainted, the team knew it was time to evacuate immediately.

When modern tools phased out the use of canaries, the workers were disappointed. Singing or whistling to the birds and having their presence in the mine brought a certain measure of comfort.

We hope that the presence of R&P Coffee Co. in our community is like the canary in the coal mine: comforting and life-saving.
